GRANT TOWNSHIP REGULAR BOARD MEETINGHeld at the Grant Township Hall 230 Gratiot Street Copper Harbor, Michigan 49918 Minutes for Tuesday, April 14th, 2009Call to OrderSupervisor Ken Stigers called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. and led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance. Roll Call
Present were Supervisor Ken Stigers, Treasurer Karen Karl, Clerk Kelly Coltas, Trustee Ned Huwatschek. Trustee Art Davis was absent.
Supervisor’s Remarks The Township Website has a new look. Lac Labelle Fire Department annual pancake breakfast will be on Sunday April 26th in Copper City, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Spring Clean up will tentatively be on June 13th/14th, pending approval of the dates from Waste Management. Rec Plan: Public comments are being compiled by Bill Olsen. Mr. Olsen will probably be coming to the next meeting with a rough draft. Correspondence The County is pursuing the junk issue on the McCracken property on the south end. Monthly ReportsTreasurer’s Report
Utility Board Still working on streamlining the hookup ordinance. The process now is awkward and needs revision. Also we are pursuing and expansion of our well area, when Traverse Engineer has the proposals ready we will move forward to the Grant process. DDA Will be working on improving the parking lot on the Westside of the Park. A new building to house the Township Truck and Storage for lawn equipment etc. is being considered. Public Safety CH Fire Dept: The regular monthly meeting for April was held on April 1st with 10 members present. Discussed were the upcoming wildfire season, Foam training, spring clean up, CHIA Summer events, Truck #2, Spaghetti Dinner, and possible propane fire training. The training session was Donning PPE and SCBA checking PASS devices and refilling air tanks. Mid month meeting had 11 members present. Foam systems were exercised, discussed chimney fire on 3-11-09 on the Norland rd and all of the problems associated with any 1st responder or fire calls there. At a future meeting will have to work on suggestions for access there.
LLB Fire Dept: Held meeting on March 3rd, 09, discussed the pancake breakfast and the hats that are to be ordered from Michael Busano and other 911 project items to be ordered as well. Will be taking out and Ad for the UP Tournament to Support the Tournament. Burn permit changes discussed as per the new DNR notice. Discussions on closing off opening between hall and kitchen because of smoke from truck and noise will get estimate on window. Monthly Training was held on 3-19-09, trained on brush truck and exercised all trucks. No call outs. 1st Responders: No call outs on North end. 1 call out on South end. 911 The weather radios supplied by Jack Duewke have been received and either have been or are in the process of being distributed. Since the Keweenaw Fire Dispatch System became operational, we have not been able to successfully operate the Eagle Harbor Repeater from the control station at the Sheriff’s Office. Mike Musiel worked with El-Com at the tower site on April 2nd and has made improvements in quality of the audio originating at the Sheriff’s Office. He is working on possible solutions to the Eagle Harbor Repeater problem. Old Business Mercy Ambulance Service is looking at stationing an ambulance in the north end of the County in Copper Harbor. The Township is trying to facilitate this. A possible new bay to the existing fire hall is being considered along with other proposals. New Business
On July 18th there will be a Memorial and a presentation in Copper Harbor at the Visitor Center for Gary Barker our Township Trustee who lost his life during a First Responder call last August. The Memorial will be between 1-4 and all those wishing to pay their respects and Honor Gary are invited. The Kiosk at Hunters Point Park will have a new panel with a dedication for Gary. The Dedication will read “This Board Walk is dedicated to the Memory of Gary M. Barker who served his community as a Grant Township Trustee, Firefighter, and First Responder. Gary lost his life when stricken during a First Responder call on August 17th, 2008. Gary’s Commitment to his community is greatly missed.”
The Flag for the Township is in need of replacement. Instead of purchasing only one Flag and having to wait for a replacement Coltas suggested by two and having a spare ready so we are not ever without a flag.
There was some public discussion on the technical aspects of a new bay for the Lac Labelle Fire Department and an extension on the back to be used as a training room.
