Grant Township Board Meeting Minutes
| GRANT TOWNSHIP BOARD MEETING At the Copper Harbor Visitor’s Center Minutes for September 13th , 2005 Call to Order and Pledge of Allegiance Supervisor Meg Vivian called the meeting to order at 6:05 pm, and led in the pledge of allegiance. Roll Call Present were Supervisor Meg Vivian, Treasurer Karen Karl, Clerk Kelly Coltas, Trustees Gary Barker and Roxann Smith. Motion to adopt Agenda put forth by Coltas/Barker, all were in favor 5-0, motion carried. Motion to approve Minutes of Regular Board Meeting of 07/12/05 Coltas/Barker. All were in favor 5-0, motion carried. Guest Speaker Sharon Powers Supervisor’s Remarks and Correspondence Remarks For the latest updates on the Keweenaw County Planning and Zoning Committee please see the Eagle Harbor Web Site. Mark Wycoff will present the latest updated program mid September. Joe Langdon and Janet Shea will be attending the October meeting to answer questions. The Supervisor extends her welcome and thanks to Sharon Powers, for her efforts on the restoration of the old School papers found in the attic of the township hall. Monthly Department Reports Treasurer’s Report Motion to accept Treasurer’s report put forth by Barker / Smith, all were in favor 5-0, motion carried Utility Board Wellhead protection report was turned in to the DEQ and was well received by Charles Thomas at the DEQ. We are looking at new water sewer billing software that will be more user friendly and could be integrated into the present book keeping system. A public information notice will be going out to water/sewer customers to keep them apprised of regular maintenance situations, i.e. to make sure there is power to their grinder pumps all winter and that the use of garbage disposals are not permitted. DDA Met but had no quorum. Public Safety CH Fire Dept. Had their monthly meeting August 3rd and discussed summer fundraisers, and the proposed installation for the dry hydrant down at the Marina. The 911 emergency Atlas for 911 has been received. There were 3 assist with 1st responders and one mutual aid response with our tanker for the forest fire in the Rice Lake area. LLB Fire Dept. Had their monthly meeting and did some maintenance. Two call outs and two mutual aid for the Hermits Cove incident. 1st Responders Congratulation to Gary Barker, Jeff Coltas, and Art Davis on obtaining their 1st responder licenses. There were 3 call outs. 911 The emergency road atlases are now out. Old Business Hunter’s Point Project Report. The documentation has been submitted. Mr. Powers had a meeting with Mr. Jukuri on further grant prospects. Lac La Belle Fire Truck update. We are just waiting for the signed documentation and then that will go to Rural Development. Road Maintenance and Park Improvements Greg Patrick from KCRC said that the chip seal that was slated to be done in August in Lac La Belle is now looking like it should be black topped instead. A meeting is planned for later this week to discuss this and some additional plans. The cost share is 50/50. New Business Estivant Pines Signage, a 2x3 sign has been donated by the Heritage Trail and Keweenaw County. This sign will be about the pines and how to get there. The location is proposed to be at the township. The Board refrained from motioning on location until they can see the sign. Park Stage, The DDA would like to put up a temporary deck structure to act as stage for entertainment purposes at the various functions scheduled for the park. It would be a platform, low to the ground and with GFI electrical outlets that could be turned on and off from inside the barn. The structure would be attached to the barn in the park. Motion to approve the DDA to build a temporary platform for entertainment at various events. It will be removed and stored after last scheduled event. Put forth by Karl/Coltas, 4-yeas and 1-nay. Motion carried 4-1. Lac La Belle street lights, a summer resident of the Betsy area has requested a street light and sign be put up at the corner of Jarvi and Betsy. The sign is in the County domain, but the light is ours. There had been a light there at one time but was on private property and run by a private citizen. Trustee Gary Barker will look into this matter to see if there is any other interest, as there are no year round residents in that area. Motion to approve the purchase of a computer for the position of Supervisor, put forth by Karl/Coltas all were in favor motion carried 5-0. Motion to approve sponsorship for Art Davis in EMT training with a cap of $1,500.00, put forth by Coltas/Vivian all were in favor. Motion carried 5-0. Public Comment Sharon Powers spoke on the restoration of old documents of Grant Township and the Grant Township Schools. She has spent a great deal of time in photo copying, binding them into books and in some cases even transcribing them. A remarkable job in all and of great historical value to the Township.
